Frankly, I detest something that is stronger than me. Therefore, as soon as I recognized my “sweet tooth” addiction, I decided to stop it. Once you realize that something in your life is addicting, push yourself to live without it for as long as you can. Sometimes even a week seems long, so if it is hard for you, start with a day or two. Do not be upset if you cannot prolong your abstinence. Beginning somewhere is already a step forward. At the same time, find an activity that interests you so that you can devote more time to it and forget about your addiction for a while.

For as long as I have been in New York, I’ve made it a point to call my dad at least once a day, with frequent texts and emails in between. I’m not the type of person who needs constant reassurance from my parents or who is not used to being away from them; I rarely talk to my mom at all, and when we do, the conversations are short and usually started by her, but for as long as I can remember, I have been closer to my dad. So it was quite a shock to wake up one morning and realize that I hadn’t talked to him in at least a week. I had no pressing news for him, true, but usually when we talk, I just ramble about a topic he has interest in, like basketball, with the casual inquiry about the rest of my family and his work thrown in. The shock came, not so much from our lack of communication, but from the fact that I hadn’t noticed or been bothered by it for such a period of time.

Although most internship opportunities require that you give up between 10 to 40 hours of your time without monetary compensation, these “bottom of the totem pole” positions are windows of opportunity that ultimately give students the chance to network with professionals while gaining valuable hands-on experience. However, as the competition for these positions increases, more and more college students are asking how to succeed when their job prospects are disappearing left and right.

While you’re studying for tests and working on papers, you have to deal with issues like friends, family, and your own happiness. With songs like “I Love College” by Asher Roth, and movies like Animal House that supposedly depict the way school “really” is, many people think college is four years of non-stop fun and limited responsibility.

Anywhere but New York, a nice date out on the town usually means dinner at the neighborhood Italian restaurant, a movie at the local theater, and maybe a bit of dancing afterwards. But in a place where restaurants pile high on top of each other, and where we need The Village Voice and The L Magazine to tell us what’s going on around the City, planning the perfect date might involve more work than simply looking up the 8:00 movie. The long-running laundry list of where to go and what to do can boggle the mind. Add a college student’s budget into the mix, and you’ve got a tall order to fill, a creative and interesting first date that’ll ease its way into the second and not break the bank. Below are a few of my favorite haunts in the City, gathered from all the Friday and Saturday nights of almost-dates, serious relationship dates, and everything in between.

Ascend the stairs on 9th Street to a Chinese restaurant and wander to the back to sip specialty drinks in an oakwood paneled speakeasy where the atmosphere is as uniquely quiet as the journey. Enjoy an intimate setting in a no standing room, where parties are seated in groups of four or fewer in cozy, dimly lit booths that overlook the animated streets through a colossal window. Bar snacks include sashimi, dim sum, Japanese sausage, and fried oysters, which complement an exotic, delicious menu of cocktails that change seasonally.

The best part of NYC is the great deals that restaurants have, whether it be prix fixe menus, early bird specials, or free appetizers. In order to find these deals, search on sites like Twitter or Menupages, or CampusClipper.com, of course. Another useful site that comes to you is Blackboard Eats, which sends huge discounts right to your e-mail.

In my experience, New York City nightlife is as fun and exciting as I had always heard. There’s this palpitating heartbeat within New York that surges with countless things to do. This is particularly true at night, and especially if you’re part of the over-21 crowd.

THE PROBLEM IS GETTING HOME With the City being as big as it is, there are plenty of opportunities to find places to drink in different parts of town. But the farther you explore, the farther you get away from home and the longer your commute will be to get back. It gets pretty easy to forget this fact when you’re on your third, fourth, or seventh round. Here are some basic things to remember when traveling home after a night out.

1 NO GETTING IN THE CAR BEFORE LETTING OTHERS OFF. Nothing bothers me more than rude people, and rude people on the subway are the worst kind. If you weasel your way in and get on before letting all the people off, not only are you breaking a cardinal rule of politeness, but you’re also holding up everyone else. Except for the homeless guy who’s passed out in the corner, everyone on the subway is trying to get somewhere. One time, when I was riding the 4 train, I witnessed a pregnant woman who was prevented from exiting the subway when the doors opened and people flooded in before she could get off. She looked extremely panicked when the doors closed again and she was stranded in the accelerating car. It wasn’t 30 seconds before she started shrieking that she was going into labor and had missed her stop on her way to the hospital. At the next stop she was escorted off the train, and hopefully made it to the hospital in time. The moral of the story is: Move. Wait. Enter.
